Paseo del Prado will house a new health center and a cultural space in summer 2026. Inma Sanz, deputy mayor and municipal spokesperson, has revealed that the project will have a budget of 3.3 million euros, and that it will be financed 52% by the Community of Madrid and 48% by the city council of the capital. The Local Historical Heritage Commission has given the go-ahead for the remodeling, which will begin in spring 2025 and finish in summer 2026.
The Area of Works and Facilities will carry out the project at number 30 Paseo del Prado: an old building of 3,397 square meters that is part of Madrid’s urban heritage. The Madrid City Council has assured that the interventions to transform the building “present a great complexity” due to the need for “structural and foundation reinforcements”.
Sanz has advanced that some of the elements of the building will be demolished to recover its inner courtyard, the upper floor will be enlarged, and in addition, the protected facades, the first floor hallway and the imperial staircase that connects the second floor with the first floor will be restored.
The past of Prado 30
The building, located in the heart of Paisaje de la Luz, was built between 1925 and 1930 by architects Adolfo Blanco and Francisco Javier Carretero. It has had three lives: one as the Casa de Socorro, another as the headquarters of the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED) and another as a building occupied by the La Ingobernable collective. After being evicted, it was considered for various projects (including a Jewish museum) that were never carried out.
