Chinatown is the unofficial name of Usera, the district with the highest concentration of Chinese citizens in all of Madrid. The customs of the Asian country have been integrated into the area, including their festivities and gastronomic preferences. Walking through its streets we find advertising signs in Chinese, and very soon we will also see public signs in this language.
The campaign ‘Usera, tu casa’ (Usera, your home) is an initiative of the Madrid City Council that informs about the rules related to waste collection in the district. To make it more inclusive, the consistory has created signs in Spanish, Chinese and English that will be distributed at 40 points in 20 areas where there have been more conflicts due to waste accumulation.
Usera, tu casa’ (Usera, your home) aims to make shopkeepers and neighbors in the area understand the problem of abandoning waste on public streets, and the sanctions that derive from it. Sonia Cea Quintana, councilor of Usera, has assured that it will be carried out to achieve a “better quality of life” in the district, which received 188 complaints related to the accumulation of garbage at the end of 2023.
Not only will signs be installed in Chinese, but leaflets will also be distributed in this language (as well as in Spanish and English) so that the campaign will reach all Usera residents. In addition, there will be informative visits to businesses and neighborhood communities in the area.
