Perpetuum mobile is the motto that PHotoESPAÑA (PHE24) has chosen for this year: a concept that alludes to a hypothetical machine of infinite energy that, after an initial impulse, could continue working forever. And it is precisely this idea of photography as constant movement that is the backbone of the edition: a medium as dynamic as its creators that captures not only movement but also collective, historical and social changes.
This new edition of PHotoESPAÑA, which will take place from May 10 to September 29, 2024, will feature a total of 84 exhibitions and the participation of 293 visual artists.
And among these exhibitions, a novelty: the Teatro Real will become for the first time the venue of PHotoESPAÑA hosting an exhibition of the composer Giacomo Puccini: not because it is about his person or his work, but to shed light on his unknown facet as a photographer.
The PhotoESPAÑA 2024 Program
In addition to Puccini, the PHotoESPAÑA program includes among its proposals an exhibition that shares the theme of the edition, Perpetuum mobile, which will bring together at the Círculo de Bellas Artes in Madrid “the work of 27 Spanish photographers born in democracy, trained in the analog/digital paradigm shift and consecrated in the first decades of the 21st century,” according to a press release.
Spanish photography, on the other hand, will also be represented through the work of Gonzalo Juanes or Javier Campano and pioneer photographers of the gender perspective such as Pilar Aymerich and Paloma Navares.
Expanding the focus, there will also be room for major retrospectives of international authors, such as Erwin Olaf, Boris Savelev and Barbara Brändli and for figures such as Masahisa Fukase, Elliott Erwitt, Consuelo Kanaga, David Goldblatt and Iwan Baan.
Other PHE24 proposals
In parallel, PhotoESPAÑA has developed a series of proposals in collaboration with other institutions, such as:
- The Field Notebooks project with National Heritage.
- The creative dialogues between emerging figures of contemporary visual creation and the collections housed in state museums such as the Museo del Romanticismo and the Cerralbo.
- A series of three meetings at the headquarters of Fundación Telefónica.
On the other hand, beyond the capital city of Madrid, the PHotoESPAÑA program will reach other parts of the Community of Madrid such as Alcobendas and Alcalá de Henares. The complete information can be found in its web page.
