Madrid is inseparable from the cinema of Almodóvar and Almodóvar is inseparable from the city of Madrid. The vague memory of any movie will always evoke some scene of the city (some scene of the movie): like the beehive houses in Qué he hecho yo para merecer esto or like the disappeared Molino Rojo de Lavapiés nightclub in Tribulete street.
Madrid, chica Almodóvar, which with its name is already a declaration of intentions about how the city is another character in the hundred Almodovarian, was installed yesterday in the Exhibition Hall 1 of the Conde Duque Cultural Center. And it did it to stay and become one of the exhibitions of the summer, as it will remain open to the public until October 20
One can speak of the exhibition as an analysis of the relationship between the director’s films and the city. From a director who has been directing for fifty years, fifty years talking about the city and, for this reason, talking about places that no longer exist and as many new ones that are appearing.
what can be seen in the exhibition?
The exhibition gathers more than 200 photos spread over an area of 695 square meters and through them the most iconic Madrid scenarios and places of the twenty-three films of the film director from La Mancha are developed. The curator of the exhibition is Pedro Sánchez Castrejón, who also wrote a book about Almodóvar’s Madrid.
The location chosen for the show is also the one that appears in one of the most iconic scenes of his filmography: the moment of the hose watering Carmen Maura in La ley del deseo. Very close to the cultural center is also the Café Moderno, a place with a lot of influence in the movie Parallel Mothers.
