It’s been just a day since the release of the trailer for The Next Room, Pedro Almodóvar’s long-awaited new film starring Julianne Moore and Tilda Swinton, and it has already given a lot to talk about. Alberto Sisí’s interview with both in Vogue about the film, shot between New York and Madrid, has left iconic quotes such as Moore talking about her passion for El Corte Inglés. But Tilda Swinton has also found in the capital a store, in this case ceramics, to return to: La Oficial.
This project, first dreamed and then materialized by Toni Torrecillas and José Barrio, was born from a car trip through Portugal in which they experienced “an epiphany” that became a reality on October 14, 2017 with the opening of its first store.
And the philosophy they carry by flag – “We like imperfect, handmade and sustainable earthenware” – seems to have struck a chord with the London actress, in the same way that the Portuguese potters did in them.
What did Tilda Swinton buy in this pottery store?
During her time in Madrid, the actress stopped by La Oficial on more than one occasion. First she visited the store they had in El Rastro, just a week before they had to close it in January -because they were going to turn it “into tourist apartments, a chore”, as can be read in her Instagram-. But the change of location did not prevent him from continuing his pilgrimage, later, to the one they opened in its current location: Calle Pelayo, 43 (Salesas).
“From February to May he came many times. He would lie on the store’s sofa to play with the dogs,” Toni Torrecillas tells Madrid Secreto. When asked what he bought, he explains that he opted for “fajalauza in yellow, pink and green níjar and some plates with embossed mushrooms.”
Swinton -who, by the way, took advantage of her stay to visit other points of our geography such as Cuenca– is not the only actress who has fallen in love with her pieces: a few months ago Hola! reported that Susan Sarandon “took half a store to decorate her new country house”.
Almodóvar and Madrid, Madrid and Almodóvar
Almodóvar’s film will hit theaters next October 18. Until then, to make the wait shorter, you can visit the free exhibition Madrid, chica Almodóvar.
This exhibition, which can be seen at the Centro Cultural Conde Duque (Calle del Conde Duque, 11) until October 20, reviews the relationship of the La Mancha-born filmmaker with the city throughout his 50-year career.
