Exquisite does not always mean sophisticated, and torreznos are worthy proof of this. This hearty delicacy from Soria has always been very well received in Madrid, where the terraceo and tapas are a religion and torrezno is the perfect accompaniment to beers.
For the first time this year two establishments of the capital will compete in the Contest of The Best Torrezno of the World to be held on March 23rd in Burgo de Osma. The intention of this gastronomic contest is to further popularize and perfect this recipe so closely linked to Castilian gastronomy, but with the rise of Japanese katsu sando -another pork frying-, who knows if it could attract international palates.
The chosen ones are Taberna El Tentadero (Calle del Dr. Gómez Ulla, 12), located in the heart of the Ventas neighborhood, a deserving contestant that has won the title of Best Torrezno of the Community of Madrid in 2025, and El Quillo de Getafe (Calle Dolores Ibárruri, 1), last year’s winner. These greats of crispy pork were selected among 11 candidates who aspired to represent the Community of Madrid in this contest that is becoming more and more famous every year.
The best torrezno of Madrid under scrutiny
Both establishments will have the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery in the preparation of traditional torrezno before a gastronomic jury that will assess aspects such as flavor, texture and the characteristic crunch of the crust.
This will be a live test, where they will have to perform a live demonstration and preparation of a traditional torrezno de Soria in front of the public and, later, a gastronomic jury will taste it blind.
In addition to professionals, amateur cooks will also participate. On this occasion, Madrid will be represented by Francisco Javier Jiménez, a butcher by profession and a native of the town of Tarancón in Cuenca, who has participated for four consecutive years.
