The prestigious Spanish Potato Omelette Championship, held within the framework of Alicante Gastronómica, reaches its seventeenth edition this year with the repetition of something that happened last year: the outstanding participation of La Falda (Miguel Servet, 4), a restaurant from Madrid that is positioned as one of the favorites to take the title.
The championship, founded in 1999 and recovered by Rafael García Santos in 2021, was on hiatus for ten years until its recovery in 2021. Since then, it has resumed its place of honor on the Spanish culinary scene, attracting the country’s most reputable tortillas. Last year, for example, the best was that of the Santander restaurant Cañadío, the work of its chef Pedro José Román.
Despite the fact that a Madrid omelette has never won in the standard category, La Falda won last year in a novel category: ‘I Campeonato de España de Tortilla de Patata Con…’. The omelette of Alejandro Olivieira, chef of La Falda, was a Betanzos-style omelette with turnip greens and onion chorizo from Lalín presented by the Madrid bar.

The jury for this edition is made up of big names in gastronomy such as journalist Pepa Fernández, ham producer José Gómez Joselito, pastry chef Paco Torreblanca, and renowned chefs such as Kiko Moya (L’Escaleta), Fran Martínez (Maralba), Alberto Ferruz (BonAmb), and Carme Ruscalleda (Moments Mandarin Oriental). All of them will evaluate the 17 finalist tortillas competing for the title, some of which have already earned fame in local and regional competitions.
