La Castellana is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city. Unusual restaurants, imposing skyscrapers, stores, clubs to go out at night? In 2025, in order to improve the connection of this important Zone with other parts of the capital city, the Madrid City Council will start the first works for the undergrounding between Sinesio Delgado Street and the North Junction of the M-30. The project has a budget of 128.9 million euros and will be completed in the first half of 2027.
A new walk in the north of Madrid

The undergrounding will be almost one kilometer long. The 820 meters of new tunnel will connect the area around the five towers and the Hospital de La Paz with the former EMT colony y Madrid Nuevo Norte. Above the tunnel that will link these zones, there will be 70,000 m² of surface area that will be used to incorporate green areas (in total, there will be an estimated 670 trees), benches, litter garbage cans, fountains and spaces for outdoor activities. Calisthenics zones, exercise circuits for senior citizens and children’s play areas will be set up. There are also plans to erect a pergola at the north end of the promenade.
Only those vehicles that need to access the surrounding parking lots and buildings will be able to drive on the surface, as well as the public buses that will be put into circulation. In addition, there will be two-way lanes for cyclists.
what will the tunnel look like?
With three northbound lanes and four southbound lanes, the tunnel will strategically connect the Castellana with new areas of Madrid. Under the new promenade, the Castellana will be extended to the Nudo Norte. From there, it will be possible to connect with other important highways, such as the M-30, M-607, A-1 and M-11. At its southern end, the tunnel ticket will be located at Sinesio Delgado, and at the northern end, next to La Paz Hospital. In addition, it will have a two-level design to respect the surrounding green zones.
