The Palacio de Liria is full of rooms that have never been shown to the general public. Luckily, with Flamboyant, the new exhibition by Joana Vasconcelos, we will be able to enjoy these spaces, which hide pieces by great masters such as Titian, Murillo, Velázquez, Goya and Rubens.
Flamboyant, organized by the Casa de Alba Foundation, will be at the palace from February 14 to July 31. Admission to the palace costs 25 euros -except for those entitled to reduced admission, who can enter for 19 euros, or children under six, who get in for free- every day except Monday at 9:15 am, when there are free sessions.
The art of Vasconcelos: between the domestic and the luxurious
Descendant of a noble family and daughter of revolutionaries, Joana Vasconcelos was clear from a very young age that she wanted to be an artist. Her works, loaded with symbolism and industriousness, are far from the industrial creations often seen in contemporary art.
For three decades he has been surprising us with transgressive designs; with luxury pieces that incorporate handcrafted products and, on many occasions, contain a social critique. An example of this is La Novia, his chandelier made from 14,000 tampons, or Marilyn, a giant heeled shoe made from pots.
For the first time, Vasconcelos brings to Madrid more than a hundred extravagant works, among them his iconic Marilyn shoe, his recent work Valkyrie Thyra, an explosion of color, or his sculptures Vigoroso and Poderoso: two imposing lions made of crochet. Undoubtedly, a must-see exhibition for lovers of contemporary sculpture.
