Jesús Soriano Coto -better known as Soy Camarero in social networks- has reignited a recurring debate in Madrid: the price of breakfast. He has done so with a tweet in which he shares the review of an indignant customer after having breakfast at a restaurant in Madrid.
The photo accompanying the message does not need much explanation: two coffees at €1.80 and two toasts with Serrano ham at €9.50 each. The fresh orange juice? Thank goodness, otherwise we’d be charged at least €30,” said the message Soriano received.
Breakfast in Madrid: better at home
The publication has revived a classic of Spanish digital folklore: the debate about how much breakfast should cost and to what extent the center of Madrid has become a theme park with souvenir prices. The responses have not been long in coming, ranging from the technical analysis of the raw material (“the cost of ham is less than €2.50, it will not have more than 25 grams”) to the inevitable comparison with Andalusia: “Today in Seville, three toasts with ham, two coffees and a ColaCao: €10.60”.
There has been no lack of sarcasm in the comments on X and Instagram: “Was it unicorn ham?”, commented one user on Instagram. Another took it with more irony: “Did it come with a scalpel for the kidney?”. And meanwhile, someone opened the melon that no hotelier would want to touch in this city: “A coffee and toast is not breakfast. It’s a tapa.”
