There are already more than 7 million registered residents in the entire Community of Madrid. That is one of the conclusions drawn from the report prepared by the Directorate General of Territorial Rebalancing for the period 2019-2024, with data from the National Institute of Statistics and the Institute of Statistics of the Community of Madrid.
A comparison halfway between illustrative and self-parodic meme: taking as a reference the capacity of the Bernabéu (80,242 seats), with the current population registered in Madrid , it would be enough to fill the Real Madrid stadium more than 87 times.
The objective of this study is, in the words of the regional government, “to know the demographic behavior of the 179 localities of the region, their geographic distribution and evolution”. Based on this information, public policies in local matters are evaluated in order to effectively plan “access to quality public services regardless of where one lives,” they point out.
The Councilor of Presidency, Justice and Local Administration, Miguel Ángel García Martín, was in charge of presenting it this Monday. According to the report, the number of empadronados in the Community of Madrid has grown by almost 5.08% since 2019.
This last year the barrier of 7 million people has been surpassed (7,001,715), which is an increase of 2% compared to 2023 and, in absolute figures, translates into 140,000 new neighbors.
Where do people registered in Madrid live?
But how is this population distributed throughout the territory? According to Martín, almost half of them live in the capital (49%), 42% in the metropolitan area and 9% in rural areas.
While Madrid capital (3,416,771), Móstoles (214,006), Alcalá de Henares (200,702), Leganés (194,084) and Fuenlabrada (190,790) concentrate more than half of the population -60.22%-, in the Sierra Norte (formed by 44 towns) there are six municipalities with less than 100 residents: La Acebeda (68), La Hiruela (83), Madarcos, (70), Puebla de la Sierra (93), Robregordo (73) and Somosierra (95).
However, that area has also increased its population since 2019 and has done so by 11%.
