Free Metro for commuters who, next Monday, June 3, ride their bicycles on the Madrid subway. The initiative, which Metro de Madrid is implementing for the first time this year, coincides with the celebration of World Bicycle Day.
With this measure, the Community of Madrid “seeks to encourage the combined use of these two means of transport and promote a more sustainable and healthy mobility”, reports a press release issued by Metro de Madrid.
And what is the procedure to enjoy free subway on Monday? Interested parties simply need to contact the station staff – either in person or through an intercom – so that access can be provided free of charge.
Beyond the free subway on Monday: general regulations for traveling by bike
Beyond specific occasions such as this one, the conditions for travel with bicycle in the subway are subject to a regulation. This establishes that it is “accessible by bike to the entire network and during all service hours on Saturdays, Sundays and holidays”.
That schedule is maintained for weekdays for lines 8, 11, 12, Metro Ligero 1 and for some specific stations on the rest of the lines. For all other cases, access is not allowed from Monday to Friday during rush hour: from 7:30 am to 9:30 am, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm and from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
Regarding the conditions under which bicycles may be transported: only one bicycle per passenger is allowed and there may be a maximum of two bicycles in the first car and two in the last car. And as long as the level of occupancy permits and other travelers are not disturbed, it can be carried on escalators, moving walkways and elevators.
What is not allowed, in any case, is to drive it inside the stations of the network.
