From old telephone booths to garbage cans: any support seems to be susceptible to becoming a bookstore. And that is the fate that awaits the old garbage cans of the Madrid Metro network, which will change their original use to house books thanks to the Metroteca project.
With this initiative, which is being taken on the occasion of the celebration of the Madrid Book Fair the aim is to give these products a second life everyday objects in disuse, facilitating the circulation of books. And the mechanics are simple: you leave one and take another.
In other words: making use of the service of Bibliometer or reading fragments of works on the ‘Libros a la Calle’ vinyls will no longer be the only way to get a new free reading on the Madrid subway.
Where and when does Metroteca land?
Metroteca will start operating as of May 14 and the recycled garbage cans will be installed -progressively- on both platforms of all the lines of the network.
In them, travelers will find a QR that explains in detail how the exchange works books. The readings that can be found may be novels, biographies, self-help, travel literature, travel guides or children’s books, excluding textbooks or educational books from the equation.
However, regardless of the genre to which the work to be deposited belongs, it is essential that it be in good condition in order to be part of the Metroteca initiative.
