Madrid aspires to position itself at the forefront of European metropolises through megalomaniac imitation. The City Council has awarded €58,628.95 to test whether it is feasible to install a giant Ferris wheel in the Enrique Tierno Galván park – in the Arganzuela district.
The project has been resonating with Madrileños for some time. Begoña Villacís, former deputy mayor, promised in March 2020 “the biggest Ferris wheel in Europe”. After his political group, Ciudadanos, was left in 2023 without representation in the City Council, the current government team has taken up the possibility of mounting this controversial ferris wheel.

This was confirmed by the current deputy mayor of Madrid, Inma Sanz, yesterday in an interview with Cadena SER, where she said that “geotechnical studies” have been initiated and that as a result of these results will be “taking the appropriate decisions.”
She said.
Sources from the mobility area of the Madrid City Council, according to the newspaper ABC, indicate that it will not necessarily be a Ferris wheel what will be built, but it may be “another type of monumental viewpoint.”
The opinion of the opposition
About an idea that the opposition has rejected arguing the need for other types of centers in the area, Sanz said that “it can be positive for the city to have a point of attraction that is recognizable as it happens in other European cities.”

Rita Maestre, spokeswoman for the municipal group Más Madrid, has reacted to the announcement and defined the idea as “nonsense”. She also added that the mayor only cares about “tourism and the business of some”. Finally, she indicated that “we don’t want Madrid to become a theme park on the fringes of its neighbors.”
