Two Madrid Metro stations will change their names in the coming weeks. On Line 1, the Sierra de Guadalupe station will be renamed Sierra de Guadalupe-Universidad. The goal is to make it easier for metro riders to find their way between the station and the nearby South Campus of the Polytechnic University of Madrid. Meanwhile, the Los Espartales station on Line 12 will be renamed Los Espartales-Coliseum, in reference to the Getafe Club de Fútbol stadium.
The change will be reflected in the network’s signage and on trains, in the public address announcements at stations, and on metro maps, and will take effect overnight: work will begin the night before the new names go into effect.
Renaming a metro station —let alone two at once—doesn’t happen every day. In fact, the last time this happened was in 2022, when the Atocha Renfe station was renamed simply “Atocha.” Earlier, in 2018, the station formerly known as Atocha was renamed Estación del Arte, and the Metropolitano station became Vicente Aleixandre Station for the millions of passengers on Metro Line 6, in honor of the Nobel Prize-winning poet.
A New Name to Kick Off La Liga
Los Espartales-Coliseum will debut its new name to coincide with the start of the 2026–27 La Liga season, whose opening match will be played between Getafe Club de Fútbol and Deportivo Alavés on Saturday, August 15 (although it will take place at Mendizorroza Stadium in Vitoria-Gasteiz).
The station will feature special décor designed by Getafe Club de Fútbol in collaboration with the club’s Federation of Fan Clubs. Among other elements identifying the team and its fans, the lyrics of the “Azulón” anthem will be incorporated into the station’s décor on the access stairs, as reported by Metro de Madrid in a press release.
“Today is a day to be very happy and, above all, to congratulate the fan clubs and all Getafe fans, because they’ve made it happen. They’ve been asking for a long time fortheColiseum to be included in the name of their metro station,” said Jorge Rodrigo, Regional Minister of Housing, Transportation, and Infrastructure.
