The Protected Designation of Origin (PDO) Wines of Madrid has much to celebrate: the XXII International Wine Competition, vermouths and wine spirits, held between April 15 and 19, has recognized a wine from Madrid with the prestigious Gran Bacchus of Gold 2024.
The award-winning reference was 750 Máximo Décimo 2016, from Bodegas Nueva Valverde, in Villa del Prado. A multi-awarded wine that this year alone has received the following awards: gold at Mundus Vini, double gold at WWSC, grand gold at the V Real Casino de Madrid Wine Competition and silver at the London Wine Competition and Frankfurt International Trophee.
To put this recognition in perspective: it has been selected after a blind tasting of more than 1,700 references in which winemakers, sommeliers, Masters of Wine, prescribers and specialized journalists acted as jurors.
What is this wine from Madrid like and how much does it cost?
In its technical specifications, the winery states that it is a wine with a “sensual and elegant” profile. As for the tasting notes, the nose is “very powerful and intense: red fruits, licorice, spices mixed with notes of coffee and smoked oak”. And in the mouth “closely related to the nose, it tastes like what it smells like. It is very powerful throughout: balanced in acidity, alcohol and bitterness. Round, smooth and with tannins that indicate it still has a long way to go. It’s a great wine!“.
In the company’s own wineries website 750 Máximo Décimo 2016 is available for purchase and the bottle (750 ml) is priced at €95.

Bodegas Nueva Valverde has not been the only recognition for the region. Nine other wines from Madrid appear on the list of winners in the Bacchus de Oro category:

In the Silver Bacchus category, we also find representation from Madrid in the form of Pedro García Fermentado en Barrica 2022, from Bodegas y Viñedos Pedro García (Colmenar de Oreja).
This prestigious award has already been awarded in Madrid on other occasions, such as in 2022, when ‘Book Eleven. Las Luces’ by Las Moradas de San Martín (in San Martín de Valdeiglesias) won the Gran Bacchus de Oro.
And at the regional level, last year it was a wine from Chinchón (Valdeliceda 2020, from Bodega del Nero) that won the title of “Best Wine of the Year” best wine of Madrid 2023 in the context of the Carlos Falcó Wines of Madrid Award.
