In order to improve coexistence among Metro de Madrid passengers, the subway will expand green seats throughout the network. The initiative began as a pilot project in 2022 and was carried out on lines 1, 6, 8 and 10. From 2025, it is expected to reach all the trains in the service.
Jorge Rodrigo, Minister of Housing, Transport and Infrastructures, presented the project today after making a tour between Moncloa and Callao stations, on Line 3, where he announced that, in total, 7,000 priority seats for the over 65s, pregnant women and people with reduced mobility will be banded at the base and back-up.
Metro de Madrid considers this initiative necessary due to the suggestions of the suburban users themselves, who ask to improve coexistence on public transport in aspects such as noise pollution (talking quietly on the phone or listening to music with headphones, among the main requests) or the rules of entry and exit (such as not obstructing the doors of the carriages or leaving before boarding the train).
“Metro’s civic campaign contemplates educational principles that young people should bear in mind when using public transport,” explains Jorge Rodrigo.“It is essential to reserve green seats for people who need them so that they have a more comfortable journey“.
The Councilor recalled that a specific campaign is also being carried out on the use of backpacks, because there are still users who enter the carriages with them on their shoulders and unintentionally disturb other passengers.
