Light, nutritious and satiating. This is the consommé of Lhardy, the most traditional of Madrid. Emilio Huguenin, founder of the restaurant, introduced in the 19th century the recipe of the broth, which has remained almost intact since then. It takes more than six ingredients and 48 hours of cooking: a perfect formula that does not stop selling even in times of pandemic. In December alone, the company makes 10,000 liters of its star snack.
On the occasion of the Christmas holidays, Lhardy takes its famous consommé to the street, very close to the busiest square in the capital. Yes, the house will set up a broth stall in the Carrera de San Jerónimo, a few meters from Casa Mira and the Osa Mayor. It will do so from Monday to Sunday until the end of the coldest winter months.
This take away service is a nod to the traditions of the house: the consommé is served in a silver samovar, just as it was in the 1840s. However, it is not possible to pay in cash: only credit cards are accepted.
The stall’s opening hours are very accessible: from 12:00 to 15:00 and from 18:00 to 22:00. On Sundays it closes three hours earlier in the evening (at 7:00 pm), but keeps the same morning hours.
More gastro plans in Madrid for Christmas
Spending December in Madrid is synonymous with visiting Christmas stalls: the most important shopping areas of the city are filled with Christmas-scented markets. Of all of them, the most interesting at gastronomic level is that of Nuevos Ministerios, which this year have signed up chefs at the level of Dabiz Muñoz and mythical houses such as the San Ginés chocolate shop.
