The number of gluten-free or celiac-friendly restaurants in Madrid has grown steadily in recent years. Even those where wheat could be at home, such as an Italian restaurant, have an extensive menu of gluten-free dishes.
Having a special menu for people with celiac disease and gluten allergies is not as easy as it may seem if you are not a specialized restaurant. In order to avoid cross-contamination between gluten and gluten-free foods, beyond separating them, you must use work surfaces and materials that are completely clean, or directly have a specific area for preparing these dishes. In any case, there are more and more restaurants that have already adopted these elaboration processes.
1. Sweden House
The brunch casa Suecia on Sundays and Saturdays is already a classic. The seventh day of the week was conceived to wallow in laziness, say goodbye to the sheets when the sun is at its peak and eat later rather than earlier. And from the cult of idle Sundays arises the bubble brunch at Casa Suecia which has a special gluten-free menu with vegan options, because being celiac can’t stop you from indulging yourself with week-end.

2. Artemis
Artemis opened in the 1990s, when vegetarian options in the capital were limited. Since 2016 they added to this a 100% gluten-free menu and it is now one of the reference restaurants for celiacs.
In addition to the menu of the day verde nettle cream, salads, vegetable croquettes, Farah Dibah cake, Queen of Africa zucchini, pizzas, hamburgers or tasting dishes are some of the proposals that you will find in its two restaurants located in the center of Madrid.

Organic, sugar-free and gluten-free, that’s what they serve at Celicioso. It has five restaurants in Madrid alone. The founder himself, Santi Godfrid, explains on his website that he aims to democratize food for celiacs and offer them a place where they feel integrated and can order any dish on the menu. They also have bakeries that follow the same philosophy and where you can also order personalized cakes.
📍 Calle de O’Donnell, 4; Plaza del Callao, 2 -9 Floor; Avenida de Europa, 16; Calle Barquillo, 19 and Calle Hortaleza, 3
Around 20 € per person.
5. Pizza Natura
Pizza Natura’s pizza bases are made of millet and quinoa, but it is very difficult to differentiate them from a traditional base, and one notices the difference with respect to the canonical pizza for reasons such as lightness rather than taste. The physical sensation of eating a whole pizza is one of lightness and not of fullness .
In this pizzeria nothing has gluten, not even the beer, it is not surprising, therefore, that they are certified by the Celiac Association of Madrid.
Calle de Jovellanos, 6.
Around 20 € per person.
6. Okashi Sanda
Okashi Sanda was the first 100% gluten and lactose free certified Japanese restaurant in Madrid. As they want to bring Japanese gastronomy closer to the greatest number of people, since 2021 they have adapted a large part of their menu to veganism. Their takoyakis, both the octopus ones and their vegan option, are exquisite, but you can’t miss their cakes either.
📍 Calle de San Vicente Ferrer, 22

7. Emma and Julia
Emma yJulia is a true classic among Madrid’s Italians. It is worth noting that the origin of the family that runs this restaurant is Sardinian. The Sardinians’ respect for their food, their raw materials and the standard is almost legendary in Italy. Emma and Julia have been giving the best of themselves for decades in La Latina. They have a complete menu for celiacs, nothing is missing, neither antipasti nor pizzas, which are made with a base of corn flour and rice. And also at home.
📍 Calle de la Cava Baja, 19
Around 20 € per person.
8. La Tape
In a corner of Malasaña and with two floors of premises is La Tape. This temple of craft beer can also boast an extensive menu that is completely gluten-free. Also their brunch and daily menu have gluten-free dishes. Hamburgers, rice dishes and even torrijas, so you won’t be deprived of anything.
📍 Calle San Bernardo, 88
Between 20 and 30 € per person.
9. Grosso Napoletano without glutine
The Grosso Napoletano chain has a gluten-free restaurant in Chueca. Burrata marinated in truffle oil, the traditional vitello tonnato, provola cheese melted in a wood-fired oven or baked eggplants are just some of the options you can taste, accompanied or not by grissini or focaccia. But if you dream of one of their pizzas, don’t let celiac disease stop you, because they have up to 12 options. And for dessert, tiramisu is a must.
📍 Calle Fernando VI, 23

That celiac disease is not an impediment to enjoy the gastronomy is something that is permeating the menus of restaurants (gluten-free) in Madrid.
